FOX News:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged her colleagues to back a major overhaul of U.S. health care even if it threatens their political careers, a call to arms that underscores the issue’s massive role in this election year.

Lawmakers sometimes must enact policies that, even if unpopular at the moment, will help the public, Pelosi said in an interview being broadcast Sunday the ABC News program “This Week.”
“We’re not here just to self-perpetuate our service in Congress,” she said. “We’re here to do the job for the American people.”

It took courage for Congress to pass Social Security and Medicare, which eventually became highly popular, she said, “and many of the same forces that were at work decades ago are at work again against this bill.”

It’s unclear whether Pelosi’s remarks will embolden or chill dozens of moderate House Democrats who face withering criticisms of the health care proposal in visits with constituents and in national polls. Republican lawmaker unanimously oppose the health care proposals, and many GOP strategists believe voters will turn against Democrats in the November elections.

Pelosi, from San Francisco, is more liberal than scores of her Democratic colleagues. But she generally walks a careful line between urging them to back left-of-center policies and giving them a green light to buck party leaders to improve their re-election hopes.

Her comments to ABC, in the interview released Sunday, seemed to acknowledge the widely held view that Democrats will lose House seats this fall — maybe a lot. They now control the chamber 255 to 178, with two vacancies. Pelosi stopped well short of suggesting Democrats could lose their majority, but she called on members of her party to make a bold move on health care with no prospects of GOP help.

“Time is up,” she said. “We really have to go forth.”

Her comments somewhat echoed those of President Obama, who said at the end of last week’s bipartisan health care summit that Congress should act on the issue and let voters render their verdicts. “That’s what elections are for,” he said.

The White House says Obama, perhaps on Wednesday, will announce a “way forward” on health care. He, Pelosi, and Senate Democratic leaders have left little doubt that they hope to pass a Democratic-crafted bill under “budget reconciliation” rules that would bar Republican filibusters in the Senate. It’s unclear whether Pelosi can muster the needed votes in the House.

White House officials say they will redouble efforts to remind voters that the Senate passed an Obama-backed health care bill in December, with a super majority of 60 votes. The new plan calls for the House to pass that bill and send it to Obama’s desk, and then use Senate budget reconciliation rules to make several changes demanded by House Democrats.

Following a Republican victory in Massachusetts last month, Democrats now control 59 of the Senate’s 100 seats, one vote short of the number needed to block GOP filibusters.

Pelosi told CNN that “in a matter of days” Democrats will have specific legislative language on health care to show to the public and to wavering lawmakers. She predicted voters will warm up to the bill once they understand its details.

“When we have a bill,” she said, “you can bake the pie, you can sell the pie. But you have to have a pie to sell.”

Obama and Democratic lawmakers say they may add several more Republican ideas to their legislative package, even if it’s unlikely to attract a single GOP vote. One idea, by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., would focus on battling waste and fraud in the medical system.

The main elements of the Democratic plan are known, and opposed by Republicans in Congress. It would insure about 30 million more Americans over 10 years with subsidies for the poor and a new requirement for nearly everyone to carry health insurance.

It would also bar some insurance company practices, such as denying coverage to people with medical problems. And it would establish government-run exchanges to help individuals and small businesses obtain insurance policies, although it would exclude the “public option” that many liberals wanted.

    MySpace Steps Up Safety Efforts

Today MySpace and a bunch of attorneys general made a big announcement about how they plan to tame the "Wild West," i.e. the internet and keep kids safe. While I’m a big fan of kids and teens being safe online, I’m interested to see if some of the technical strategies will be effective. Here are the highlights from the press release:

Site Design and Functionality. The Principles incorporate safety initiatives that MySpace has already implemented and initiatives it will work to implement in the coming months. Examples of safety features MySpace has in place include reviewing every image and video uploaded to the site, reviewing the content of Groups, making the profiles of 14 and 15 year old users automatically private and protecting them from being contacted by adults that they don’t already know in the physical world, and deleting registered sex offenders from MySpace. Examples of improvements MySpace will make include defaulting 16 and 17 year old users’ profiles to private and strengthening the technology that enforces the site’s minimum age of 14.

I’m surprised to learn that MySpace reviews every image and video as well as group content — vs. reacting when something is flagged. I wonder if it’s automated, human or both.Update:from the follow up email: All hosted images and videos are reviewed for compliance with Terms of Use (this includes over 7 million new images and videos uploaded everyday).

The move to default 16 and 17yearold profiles to private feels extreme to me — can they change this default? I feel like older teens should have the option to create a public profile on MySpace to showcase their music or other creations. As one of the AGs said during the press conference, "You wouldn’t let your children drive a car…" but 16yearolds can drive, and they should be able to have a public profile.Update:I’m toldall teens can override this optionand make their profiles public, though I wonder how many know they can go in and change this setting… I don’t know why I thought 14 and 15year olds couldn’t override this (my bad!). Thisisstill could be really bad for the widget/layout space.

The follow up email they sent also mentions that "adults can never add under 16’s as a friend unless they know the under 16’s last name or email address (adult must know the user in the physical world)." This means 14 and 15year olds can no longer be friends of YA authors, celebrities or musicians…(Update:see Tommy’s point in response to this in the comments).

Supposedly, MySpace is scanning key words to discover underage users and delete them from the service, but what about all of the teens, which is a lot of them, who list their age as 99?

Education and Tools for Parents, Educators and Children. The Principles acknowledge that MySpace has already been devoting meaningful resources to Internet safety education including a new online safety public service announcement targeted at parents and free parental software that is under development. MySpace will explore the establishment of a children’s email registry that will empower parents to prevent their children from having access to MySpace or any other social networking site. In addition, under the Principles MySpace will increase its communications with consumers who report a complaint about inappropriate content or activity on the site.

Increased education is great as along as it’s not predatorfocused and fearbased. And better customer service is always a good thing. The children’s email registry? Um…how easy is it to create another email address? This seems symbolic more than anything else.

Law Enforcement Cooperation. The Attorneys General view MySpace’s cooperation with law enforcement, which includes a 24hour hotline, to be a model for the industry. The parties will continue to work together to enhance the ability of law enforcement officials to investigate and prosecute Internet crimes.

    Great.

Online Safety Task Force. As part of the Principles, MySpace will organize, with the support of the Attorneys General, an industrywide Internet Safety Technical Task Force to develop online safety tools, including a review of identity authentication tools. While existing age verification and identity products are not an effective safety tool for social networking sites, the Task Force will explore all new technologies that can help make users more safe and secure including age verification. The Task Force will include Internet businesses, identity authentication experts, nonprofit organizations, academics and technology companies.

I’m curious to see what they come up with. Most age verification tends to be cumbersome and clunky. Will they ask all existing users to verify as well? If it becomes too hard to sign up on MySpace or Facebook, the next generation of teens may seek out another "place for friends" — oh wait, they have already, it’s called Facebook!

P.S.I was sent a list showing what MySpace has done and plans to do compared with other large social networking sites — I can’t print the list because it was sent "on background," but it did clearly show that MySpace is doing the most in terms of safety. They’re also the biggest site and have taken the most heat on these issues, though Facebook has also recently been on these AGs’ radar.

P.P.S.Seethe AP story— it mentions the creation of a "high school" section as well.

One more interesting tidbit:danah boyd mentioned that MySpace now caps the age you can fill out at 68 so all those 99yearold teens I still see are "legacy" profiles — they’ve been warned, but they haven’t been deleted. She says, many of the teens she has interviewed are tweaking their age in the +10 years to 4 years range.

    The Chosen Girls

Tina over at Buzz Marketing sent me some press material on a new Christian tween property launching in ’06 called Chosen Girls. So while the Bratz are probably the secular answer to the punky tween licensing bonanza trend andMiss O & Friendsbeing somewhat more wholesome entry, Chosen Girls are inyouface Christian. The first page of the press material quotes the Bible and features the three girls (Trinity, Melody and Harmony) wearing either crosses or the word "faith" in some way. They say they’re crosscultural but the anime style in which they are drawn makes them all look white to me.G Studios, LLCis the creator of Chosen Girls, which will be features in everything from stationery to dolls, bedding, etc., etc. If you go to their site, you can read all about em’ (it’s in Flash or I’d copy some of it here…)

      Mimimimimimimi….

Everyone seems to be bitching about the return of the cicadas this year; of course, in Japan, the cicada is a major topic of summerthemed traditional poetry, mostly using its voice to evoke solitude or its short life to evoke the 無常 (evanescence, contingency) of This World. Basho Matsuo, the greatest of the haiku poets, wrote several such verses, and one frequently sees them in translation. One of my favorites, though, is this affecting, if lessprofound, example, which doesn’t seem to make it into translation often:

      いでや我よき布着たり蝉衣

Ide ya / Ware yoki nuno kitari / Semi koromo

      Behold me! I wear
      the finest garments–the robe
      of the cicada

A sucky translation, but hey, it’s the spur of the moment. I’m as drawn to the serious insights of traditional poetry as anyone, but I like the way the great writers such as Basho and Saigyo were able to find something enlightening about a relaxed, playful moment, too. The summer lightness of his simple, rough clothing makes Basho feel like a cicada with translucent wings. An image to savor now. Soon, most of Japan will be like the inside of a dumpling steamer; not even with the aid of air conditioning will the finest linen and cotton feel like anything but a soaked dishrag.

Added at some ungodly hour Monday morning: It occurs to me that, since two people who might be reading this are into sewing, the poem above might have more impact if I make it clear that I think the main way Basho is drawing an analogy between his clothing and the wings/shell of the cicada is through their common texture. The summer robe of a priest would have been made of unfaced, looselywoven raw cotton or silk. The uneven slubs would have created a texture very much like the veined wings of the cicada, and the folds created by the way it draped might have suggested folded wings, too.

I recently ran into a cool visual search site calledSearchMethat lets you search visually using screenshots of search results.  It’s really iPod Touch/iPhone browsing applied to a search engine.

The service works pretty fast and it’s pretty neat.  I might not use it on regular basis but it seems to have a big future.

For being a good search engine, we gave it our “Web3.0″ tag.:)
